Double Chocolate Scone Recipe chocolate chip and walnut scone on baking pan

Double Chocolate Scones - Easy, Decadent & Delicious!

double chocolate scones with chocolate chips and walnuts on a baking pan with parchment

Prep Time: 10 Minutes

Baking Time: 17 minutes

Total Time: 25- 30 Minutes

Servings: 12 Scones

Equipment Needed: Mixing bowl, sheet pan, food scoop & parchment preferred

Special Note: I always mix these by hand. It gives the proper shape and texture.

* Preheat oven to 375 degrees

Ingredients:

Dry Ingredients

1/4 cup brown sugar (any sugar will do!)

1 1/2 cups flour

1/2 cup oats

1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/4 teaspoon salt

2 + Heaping Tablespoons Cocoa (optional-leave out if you want the basic flavor to shine through!)

Wet Ingredients

1/2 cup melted butter or oil of choice

1/2 cup milk of choice (we use almond milk with good results!)

3 Tablespoons maple syrup (it works fine without, but it adds a nice flavor and helps hold things together!

The Extra Add Ins - 1 cup of Whatever you Like or Find!

1/2 cup of chopped walnuts (or any nut, seed, etc.!)

1/2 cup chocolate chips (or frozen blueberries, chopped apple, leftover Halloween candy...you get my drift!)

Directions:

  1. Put a sheet of parchment on baking pan/cookie sheet-enough to cover. If not parchment, oil the pan or your scones will bake too fast and be hard to remove!

  2. Mix dry ingredients together in large bowl.

  3. Mix wet ingredients together.

  4. Add wet ingredients to dry ingredients and mix together by hand until just incorporated.

  5. Fold in the Extras until evenly mixed in.

  6. Drop by 1/4 cup scoopfuls on baking sheet. A food disher/scoop is great for this!

  7. Bake in a preheated 375 degree oven for 17 minutes. Check at 15 minutes in case your oven is in that enthusiastic overheating mode! The scones may take as long as 20 minutes.

Your scones are done when they look a little dry and craggy like a well baked cookie.

If you like a more crumbly scone, let it ride another minute or so, but watch carefully!

You're living on the edge (unlike Scaredy Squirrel-the book character that inspired this post!) and you really don't want a burnt scone! Nope! Nobody wants that!

These chocolatey scones also freeze very well and are a great portable snack! Perfect for those afternoon munchies or with a cup of coffee or tea!

Happy Baking!!
